Altair Joins AMEDEO ITN as Consortium Partner, Providing Comprehensive Support and Training for Early Stage Researchers

Researchers adopt HyperWorks Software to assist in their mission to provide radical innovation to the aerospace industry Leamington Spa, UK. - March 3, 2014 – Altair today announced that it has made its leading computer aided engineering (CAE) software suite, HyperWorks®, freely available to all early stage researchers of the Aerospace Multidisciplinary Enabling Design Optimisation Marie Curie Initial Training Network (AMEDEO ITN) project. The move grants AMEDEO ITN fellows access to industry leading simulation tools to support research into the development of the next generation of environmentally-friendly aircraft. The licenses arranged by AMEDEO ITN Principal Investigator, Tim Surry of Altair ProductDesign UK, are to be remotely accessed through Altair’s new cloud-managed licensing system, Hosted HyperWorks Units (HHWU).

Use of HHWU eliminates the IT burden of maintaining server-based software licenses and is ideal for the AMEDEO ITN project, which involves geographically dispersed industry and university partners across Europe. HHWU allows members of the AMEDEO ITN early-stage research team to work remotely and access the HyperWorks applications on-demand.

"Altair is excited to be a consortium partner with AMEDEO,” said Tim Surry, Senior Project Engineer at Altair ProductDesign. “Following our initial commitment of hosting early-stage AMEDEO ITN researcher, Jonathan Ollar, we are pleased to add even more practical support by making HyperWorks easily available to all early stage researchers."

Jacquelyn Quirk, Academic Liaison for Altair UK explains how the academic industry can gain further resources from Altair. “In addition to partnering with consortia like AMEDEO, Altair offers students and researchers around the world the opportunity to access HyperWorks technology and learn simulation techniques. This is very much in line with Altair’s commitment to radical innovation in support of sustainable design.”

Through the AMEDEO ITN project, the aerospace industry will gain a new cohort of engineers with the skills needed to solve tomorrow’s emissions and efficiency problems using multi-disciplinary design optimisation. To ensure that the research fellows gain the greatest benefit from Altair’s offer, a practical training session was recently offered at the end of the week-long AMEDEO design optimisation lecture series, hosted by Vassili Toropov at the University of Leeds. The HyperWorks training workshop linked theory to industry applications.

Researchers were instructed through a series of practical exercises in the use of Altair’s optimisation solvers OptiStruct® and HyperStudy® which are very relevant to the optimisation objectives of AMEDEO ITN. Altair OptiStruct is an award-winning structural analysis and optimisation solver for both concept design and fine-tuning optimisation techniques. Altair HyperStudy is a stochastic analysis tool which was developed for engineers to improve their designs through robustness and reliability assessments and optimisation.

Professor Harvey Thompson, AMEDEO ITN Project Coordinator, University of Leeds is delighted with the partnership. “By providing all the AMEDEO early stage researchers with access to state-of-the-art design optimisation tools, Altair's support will ensure that their research achieves the maximum possible academic and industrial impact,” he commented.
