Altair Receives 2015 HPCwire Editors’ Choice Award in Oil and Gas
Cray and Intel Collaboration Advances Subsea Riser Simulation
Austin, TX — Nov. 17, 2015 — Altair has won Best Application of HPC in Oil and Gas in the annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards for its work with Intel and Cray. The award was presented at the 2015 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC15), in Austin, Texas.
Altair, Intel and Cray collaborated to benchmark a subsea riser simulation solution that gives engineers the necessary computational systems to perform advanced subsea computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with better speed, scalability and accuracy. The solution included Altair’s AcuSolve CFD solver running on Cray
® XC supercomputer systems powered by Intel
® Xeon
® processors. It allows operators and engineers responsible for riser system design and analysis to increase component life, reduce uncertainty and improve the overall safety of ultra-deep-water systems while still meeting their demanding development schedules.
"The oil and gas industry has a nearly insatiable appetite for running very large, compute-intensive simulations on very large clusters,” said Bill Nitzberg, Chief Technology Officer for PBS Works at Altair. “Combining state-of-the-art HPC technologies, Altair, Intel, and Cray demonstrated how energy companies can simulate faster, scale bigger, and achieve more accurate results. Thank you HPCwire!”
The results of the study demonstrate an ability to speed up simulations significantly, even at 4000+ cores and achieve a 20x L/D ratio increase on a single Cray XC cabinet. The end result is the ability to design longer-lasting riser systems with better performance and integrity.
The annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community as well as selections from the HPCwire editors. The awards are an annual feature of the publication and constitute prestigious recognition from the HPC community. These awards are revealed each year to kick off the annual supercomputing conference, which showcases high performance computing, networking, storage, and data analysis.
"HPCwire readers are among the most informed in the HPC community and these awards are ultimately given to the organizations that are making the greatest impact in advancing technology and humanity itself through high performance computing,” said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publisher of HPCwire. "The HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards send a strong message of support and appreciation from those in the global HPC community. We are proud to be able to recognize these efforts each your and our congratulations go out to all the winners.”
