Frequency domain methods for fatigue analysis and/or for general random response analysis have experienced a resurgence over the last few years due to improved technology and better computational processes. Today, a complete range of models can be processed from full vehicle systems to local component systems. Single input BASE shake loads and multiple correlated input loads can now be easily processed by the User. These loading conditions can also contain random PSDs and/or deterministic components like a sine sweep. Different kinds of fatigue life calculations can be done including both Stress-Life and Strain-Life approaches.

E-Motor Thermal Load: How Simulation Helps to Overcome Challenges

An increase of the e-motor operating temperature above critical levels reduces especially the life expectancy of the insulation material, which potentially results in the destruction of the motor. High temperatures also increase winding resistance. Cooling decreases the resistance and electric losses respectively. Lower electric losses reduce the amount of (expensive) copper required to achieve the targeted machine performance. The presentation shows how CFD simulation helps to determine the thermal load of electric motors and how to develop the optimum cooling system for maximum performance and life time.

1D System Simulation Overview

Learn how Activate serves as Altair’s open integration platform for multi-disciplinary system simulation involving mechanical dynamics, controls, hydraulics, thermal effects, electronics, electromagnetics, and more. 1D diagrams can be built using either a signal-based approach or a physical modeling approach based on the Modelica and SPICE standards or both. Hybrid simulations can involve continuous time and discrete events. Models can be linearized for analysis in the frequency domain. Mixed models combining 1D+3D can be constructed and simulated by using the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) standard. All tools are built-in; no extra-cost add-ons are required.

Improving Truck Ride Comfort Using Vehicle Simulations

In order to improve low-frequency truck ride comfort, it is important to derive optimal Cab/Chassis Suspension & Damping values by evaluating the vehicle vibration characteristics caused by road surface condition. In this study, the ISO 8608 standard road profiles are implemented using Compose and MotionSolve. The vibration characteristics and the effect of design parameters are studied. The ride comfort performance is evaluated using the ISO 2631. Heavy Duty Truck (10x4 Cargo, Payload 25ton) is constructed with a flexible multi-body dynamics model using MotionSolve. The Quarter Car and Half Car’s vibration models are constructed with Compose and MotionSolve and the possibility of preliminary ride comfort evaluation was studied.

ModelCenter’s powerful integration capabilities simplify building automated multidisciplinary workflows. This enables the Altair Hyperworks software suite to be integrated in highly complex applications. In this example ModelCenter was used to solve an industrial multidisciplinary design problem, the design of an electric motor for an automobile. Electromagnetic, thermal, and structural performance criteria are simultaneously considered to design an efficient motor. The individual disciplines are evaluated using Altair solvers – Flux Motor, Flux, and OptiStruct. ModelCenter provides an easy way to connect the different analysis tools into a sophisticated workflow.
